From lowered cancer risks to a sharper memory, more studies are showing that coffee is good for you - but why?

Regular coffee drinkers have a 39 percent decreased risk of head and neck cancer, according to a new study published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention. Those who drank an estimated four or more cups a day had significantly fewer cancers of the mouth and throat than non coffee drinkers, the study found.

"Coffee contains more than a thousand chemicals, some of which have antioxidant and antimutagenic activities," Mia Hashibe, assistant professor of medicine at the University of Utah and the study's lead researcher, told Life's Little Mysteries. "Further research is necessary to identify which ingredients in coffee are responsible for the results we observed in our study."

A study earlier this year by neuroscientists at the University of Lisbon showed that drinking coffee can help to prevent the neural degeneration associated with brain disorders and aging. The scientists found that drinking up to four cups of coffee a day over a long period of time actually

Other research has shown that coffee is good for the cardiovascular system. Women who drank one to three cups of java a day reduced their risk of cardiovascular disease by 24 percent, according to the Iowa Women's Health Study that tracked 27,000 women for 15 years, although it was noted that this benefit diminished as the quantity of coffee rose above three cups.

And while coffee has been given a bad rap for supposedly upping the risk of stroke and coronary heart disease, scientific studies have revealed the contrary. The risk of some cancers may be cut by drinking coffee. Research presented at the 2009 American Association for Cancer Research Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research Conference showed that coffee cut male coffee drinkers' risk of aggressive prostate cancer by 60 percent, based on a 20-year study of 50,000 men.

And people who drink coffee reduce their risk of developing liver cancer by 41 percent, compared to people who never drink coffee, according to a study in the journal Hepatology. The researchers theorized that compounds found in coffee may block the action of enzymes involved in detoxifying carcinogenic compounds that may lead to liver cancer, the third largest cause of cancer deaths around the world, after lung and stomach cancer.

Other recent studies have shown that coffee is protective against certain brain tumors, endometrial cancer and advanced prostate cancer, Hashibe said.

While it is true that some of the chemicals present in a cup of joe may be gastrointestinal irritants, coffee is not as much of a cause of heartburn and acid reflux as previously believed. Scientists have actually identified a chemical in coffee, called N-methylpyridinium, which inhibits acid production. The compound is more common in dark roasts like espresso and French roast blends, according to the Research Platform of Molecular Food Science at the University of Vienna.

But not all of the chemicals found in coffee are good for you. It's been blasted for containing pesticides and dangerous chemicals.

A typical cup of coffee contains about 10 milligrams of known carcinogens, such as benzene and formaldehyde, according to McGill University chemistry professor Joe Schwarcz, writing in "The Fly in the Ointment: 70 Fascinating Commentaries on the Science of Everyday Life" (Ecw Press, 2004). However, other experts argue that these trace amounts are too small to pose a serious cancer risk, and point to studies showing that coffee reduces the risk of several cancers.

In fact, for most adults, coffee is the number one source of antioxidants, or chemicals that prevent cellular damage, according to a study funded by the American Cocoa Research Institute.

I came across some interesting facts on this coffee site called E-Imports this morning that I thought I'd share with everyone. The article stated that specialty coffee sales are increasing by 20% per year and account for nearly 8% of the 18 billion dollar U.S. coffee market.
The article states that over 50% of Americans over 18 years of age drink coffee every day. This represents over 150 million daily coffee drinkers.
Men drink as much coffee as women; each consuming an average of 1.6 cups per day. Among coffee drinkers, the average consumption in the United States is 3.2 cups of coffee per day.
65% of all coffee is consumed during breakfast hours, 30% between meals, and the remaining 5% with other meals.
Women indicated that drinking coffee is a good way to relax. Men indicated that coffee helps them get the job done.
The United States imports in excess of $4 billion worth of coffee per year. Americans consume 400 million cups of coffee per day making the United States the leading consumer of coffee in the world.

Great Saturday

Because my wife was to work on Sunday we had father's day on Saturday. Our day started out getting ready for our sons swim meet and he needed to be at the pool by 8AM to get checked in. My wife and I were both scheduled to volunteer at the meet, with my wife working the snack bar during the second half of the meet and I was scheduled to be a timer also during the second half. The swim meet got under way a little after 9Am and our son was scheduled to swim the 50 yd freestyle, 50 yd breaststroke, 100 yd IM and the 200 yd free relay. Our son swims in the 9-10 yr old category and he received 3 first place ribbons and one second place ribbon in the breaststroke. So it was a great swim meet for him and the entire team as they beat the other team in what was the first meet of the summer. He had personal best times in all 4 of his meets so that was great also. He really enjoys swimming and being a part of the team.
  After the swim meet we came home and rested up for a couple of hours and then went to see the movie Toy Story 3 which was really great. Usually sequels are not as good as the originals let alone this being the 3rd installment but we really enjoyed it and I recommend it highly. It's a nice family movie and there's not a lot of those it seems sometimes.
  After the movie, we went to a going away party for some friends that are moving to the Palm Desert area due to a change in jobs for them. We have known them since our kids were in the same play group during pre-school, so were a little sad to see them leave but happy for their new opportunity.
  After that we came home and just relaxed watching some TV for a little while before heading off to bed. We all had a great day and it was a nice Fathers Day one day early. Hope everyone is having a nice weekend and Happy Fathers Day to all the Dads out there.

Swim season

Our Son's swim team held their last morning practice today before the season gets under way tomorrow with their first meet of the season. Our son Will swims in the 9-10 division and watching him this morning and seeing just how good of a swimmer he has become was really special to see, he was practicing at the same time that the 6 and under kids were also practicing and I was flashing back to when he first started swimming at 5 with the team. Watching those young kids try to learn the strokes and make it to the other end of the pool without stopping or hanging onto the lane lines brought back lots of memories for me. You can really see how all the kids grow by watching them move from one age group to the next. We love that he enjoys swimming so much and the swim team is just like a big family and all the kids cheer everyone on in their meets, and at the last home meet of the year all the seniors get a big send off with the parents giving a little speech about their kid and what the swim team has meant to them. It's a really nice send off for the kids before they head off to college.

Start of Summer

Well it might not be the official start of summer yet but for us it has now started. Last Friday was the last day of school for our son Will, so we decided to go camping for the weekend just to celebrate all that he accomplished in the fourth grade. So we were lucky enough to get our favorite space at New Brighton State Beach a couple weeks before school ended. There had to be a cancellation because this park is always sold out and that someone cancelled on our favorite site was just a good omen. We took off once school got out Friday at 12:30 and was at the campsite in a couple of hours. We also invited some friends of ours to join us for the weekend and they have two kids of their own. The weather was great all weekend and the kids had a blast at the beach. The great thing about going to the beach is the kids never say there bored or wonder what else is there too do. They can just play all day in the sand or surf and they then come back to the camp tired, and content to wait for dinner and the campfire activities. We also took our Great Dane Casey along and she did really great. We took her last year when we were there for a week and she does really well.
When we got home yesterday afternoon we just unloaded everything and decided we would wait to put everything away until today and we all just relaxed and watched the movie "Back to the Future".
Our Son said it was the best way to start off Summer. Tonight swim season gets under way with time trails and a desert party afterwards, with the first swim meet this coming weekend.

Last Week of School

Well it's finally here, the last week of school and then the rush into summer plans. Last night our son who's in the 4th grade had their final class play of the year. It was about the founding of our country and it went off really well. Today he had two projects that were due and of course they were not finished until last night. Tomorrow is the class picnic and friday is just a half day for them.
Our son Will swims on a summer league and they have been practicing for about a month now what with conditioning classes and his first meet is next weekend with the championship meet the first weekend in Aug. He also will be playing flag football this fall with practices starting in Aug. He will be going to Scout camp this summer for a week and we'll be going camping as a family a couple times also. So this summer should be action packed and hopefully will create some good memories for him.

Finally the weather is starting to feel like summer around here, and here is how were spending our day. My wife went out to hit all the garage sales with a friend in search of a hammock stand, while I took our son to flag football tryouts. Our son is 10 and this will be his first year playing football. After practice was over we all met up to go cherry picking at one of the u-pick em farms which are about 40 minutes from where we live. We also ended up picking some peaches, and I have visions of eating both cherry pies and peach cobblers real soon.
We are now resting at home after a fun filled morning and afternoon and planning on going out for dinner and seeing the movie Marmaduke in a little bit. We have to see the movie because we have a Great Dane ourselves. She's sixteen months old now and just a joy.
This is how we spent our day, how did you spend your day? I hope everyone enjoyed their day and the rest of the weekend also.

Plenty of health benefits are brewing in America's beloved beverage.

Want a drug that could lower your risk of diabetes, Parkinson's disease, and colon cancer? That could lift your mood and treat headaches? That could lower your risk of cavities?

If it sounds too good to be true, think again.

Coffee, the much maligned but undoubtedly beloved beverage, just made headlines for possibly cutting the risk of the latest disease epidemic, type 2 diabetes. And the real news seems to be that the more you drink, the better.

Reducing Disease Risk

After analyzing data on 126,000 people for as long as 18 years, Harvard researchers calculate that compared with not partaking in America's favorite morning drink, downing one to three cups of caffeinated coffee daily can reduce diabetes risk by single digits. But having six cups or more each day slashed men's risk by 54% and women's by 30% over java avoiders.

Though the scientists give the customary "more research is needed" before they recommend you do overtime at Starbuck's to specifically prevent diabetes, their findings are very similar to those in a less-publicized Dutch study. And perhaps more importantly, it's the latest of hundreds of studies suggesting that coffee may be something of a health food -- especially in higher amounts.

In recent decades, some 19,000 studies have been done examining coffee's impact on health. And for the most part, their results are as pleasing as a gulp of freshly brewed Breakfast Blend for the 108 million Americans who routinely enjoy this traditionally morning -- and increasingly daylong -- ritual. In practical terms, regular coffee drinkers include the majority of U.S. adults and a growing number of children.

"Overall, the research shows that coffee is far more healthful than it is harmful," says Tomas DePaulis, PhD, research scientist at Vanderbilt University's Institute for Coffee Studies, which conducts its own medical research and tracks coffee studies from around the world. "For most people, very little bad comes from drinking it, but a lot of good."

Consider this: At least six studies indicate that people who drink coffee on a regular basis are up to 80% less likely to develop Parkinson's, with three showing the more they drink, the lower the risk. Other research shows that compared to not drinking coffee, at least two cups daily can translate to a 25% reduced risk of colon cancer, an 80% drop in liver cirrhosis risk, and nearly half the risk of gallstones.

Coffee even offsets some of the damage caused by other vices, some research indicates. "People who smoke and are heavy drinkers have less heart disease and liver damage when they regularly consume large amounts of coffee compared to those who don't," says DePaulis.

There's also some evidence that coffee may help manage asthma and even control attacks when medication is unavailable, stop a headache, boost mood, and even prevent cavities.

What's Your Morning Routine Like?

My mornings especially during the week go something like this. When I first come out in the morning I always get the coffee started, then I walk outside to get the paper. Once back inside I spend time with our 15 month old Great Dane puppy Casey. I'll usually sit down at the couch and she'll come over and straddle my legs and then just lean into me so I can give her a good scratch all over and give her my undivided attention for about 5 minutes. After the coffee is brewed I'll pry her off my lap and grab my first cup and start reading the paper. It's at about this time that my son Will comes out and he then has to give Casey some attention. He'll either play with her on the floor or pretend that he's hiding from her while hiding under a blanket on the couch. That usually doesn't work very well, as she'll just usually sit on the blanket that he's hiding under bringing pleas from him to get her off of him.

Once play time is done it's time to figure out what Will wants for breakfast. This usually brings reply's like I don't know? or I hate that! This can go on for a while but once he decides on something we have our breakfast and get Casey fed, otherwise she just stares at what were eating while standing next to us. Seeing how she's taller than the table, this is not a good thing. Once breakfast is done I grab my second cup of coffee and Casey goes outside to explore the backyard while Will is off playing with something or back to laying on the couch waiting to be told it's time to get ready for school.

After I finish my coffee and reading the paper it's time to get Will's lunch ready and start telling him it's time to get dressed. I usually have to remind him several times to get dressed and brush his teeth. Finally we get off to school.

Once home I have my 3rd and usually final cup of coffee and turn on the computer to check email and decide what needs to be done that day. If it's nice outside that usually means a walk for Casey at some point in the morning.

This represents a 77% increase over first quarter revenue 2009. Consolidated Gross Profits for Q1 2010 were $207,860 versus Gross Profits for Q1 2009 of $113,296 representing an 83% increase. Dave Briskie, CEO for Javalution, stated, "We were pleased that we were able to achieve significant revenue growth while also achieving an increase in our gross profit margins. Additionally, we were able achieve these increased revenue numbers for Q1 while only realizing a 4% increase in operating expenses over Q1 2009." The company's Q1 2010 cash expenses were $452,844 VS $435,695 in Q1 2009. Mr. Briskie, further stated, "The first quarter comparables showed solid revenue growth in both divisions of our company." He further stated, "Javalution Coffee Company must accelerate revenue growth throughout the year to reach its goal of profitability by the end of this year." Javalution Coffee Company reported a net loss from operations (excluding non-cash expenses) of $269,727 for the quarter vs. a loss of $403,616 in Q1 2009. The company cut its losses by 33% versus the comparable quarter.

The company growth was attributed to triple digit sales increases from its JavaFit brand via its Network Marketing Division along with 37% sales growth coming from CLR Roasters, the company's wholly owned roasting operation.

Internet Spending Continues To Rise
I just read an article on Fast Company that stated last year 154 million people or 49.8% of the U.S. population bought something online last year. The total amount spent online last year in the U.S. was $155 billion dollars which averages out to $1,006.50 per person who bought something online. These totals are supposed to keep increasing over the next few years.

When trying to spread the word about Blastoff to build your business, it's important to join lots of different networking sites. Where you can join up with other people to discuss your business opportunity and join in different discussion groups. Spreading the news via Facebook and Twitter or MySpace is fine. However I think you also need to expand out from there. I belong to groups such as Start up Space, Networking Online, SoAct, The Free Marketer Networking site, Entrepreneur Connect, & EnerjizedLife. On each of these sites I have joined other groups and started up my own groups in the hope of building an online presence. I also host blogs on these sites, as well as on posterous & blogger. This all takes time and is a slow process that I hope will open up opportunities for my Blastoff Business.
I also have placed several free ads regarding Blastoff in different parts of the state. All these things take time and effort. Just like any other business, you have to be willing to put the time in to make it successful.

The Value of Free

I recently wrote about Blastoff on another blog that I have. In the article I was trying to find out what holds people back from signing up with Blastoff. After all its free. I received a comment back from that article, in which the person said that he had tried to market a free service in the past, which also had a way for you to make money. He found he had much more success marketing services where you had to pay to join up. That people questioned the value of a service that was free, and that they felt they must be getting greater value if they had to pay.

So I wanted to talk about what you get with Blastoff. So here we go.

What holds you back?

I have been trying to figure out what holds people back from signing up for their free Blastoff page. I'm sure some think that because they only buy stuff online a couple times a year, that its just not worth it. Well, they probably know lots of people that do buy quite a bit online. Those people will see the advantage of being a member of Blastoff with the great savings there making, and will refer it to their friends, and slowly at first they will see their network getting larger and start seeing checks showing up in the mail that is coming from the purchases of others in their network. They then start telling more people about the added revenue they are now receiving, and more people start to sign up to take advantage of the great deals and build their own network.
All the while the person who said I only make a few purchases online each year, hears about how there friends are doing and wishes they had taken advantage of it themselves.
Everyone can take advantage of Blastoff. Blastoff can be a valuable part of what ever business your currently involved with. Their is not another easier way to add another potential revenue stream.

Latest news on Inflation

I just finished reading a story this morning in the Business section that was titled Consumers squeezed as inflation outpaces wages. The article stated that workers saw their inflation-adjusted weekly wages fall 1.6 percent last year-the sharpest drop since 1990.

The article goes on to say that for some families, the overall inflation rate last year – 2.7 percent understates their burden. Many are struggling with surging costs for health care, college tuition both of which has been galloping far above the overall inflation rate.

The article also stated that inflation-adjusted pay has sunk in five of the past seven years.

So for me with fuel prices on the rise and with unemployment at record highs, it would appear this trend is just going to continue for at least a few more years.

Lately I have been trying to get the word out about Blastoff and why I think its such a great deal. What with the ability to set up your homepage with all the features you like best and the ability to get cash back on all your purchases plus the ability to make money when people that sign up thru your site make purchases. I have a blog on Posterous which I think is a really cool site with lots of neat features. I have also started up a group on a site called So Act. Hi everyone, The other day I was talking to someone about Blastoff and he asked me why he should join Blastoff . He already had a Yahoo homepage and why should he change. I told him that I also had a Yahoo homepage before but what I enjoyed about Blastoff was that I had all the news sites, video sites, music and games plus my Facebook starting point all on one page without it looking cluttered or having to switch around. I then mentioned that what I liked the best was that it linked to a shopping portal with over 400 merchants and I could receive cash back on every purchase. Hope everyone has been enjoying the holiday season and that you have been able to share it with the ones you love. That to me always seems to be the part that I enjoy the best. The presents do not matter as much as just being able to spend time with my family. As kids you enjoy the presents and you can not wait to get up and open presents. My 9 yr old son came barging in to our bedroom at 4AM saying its Christmas morning and asking if he could open a present and yet I can still recall as a kid the wonderful feeling when all the family and relatives would arrive at my Grandmothers house for breakfast on Christmas. Time with family and friends are to be treasured.
As we start to look to the new year and wonder what it will bring, I hope the new year starts to bring people off the unemployment lines and back in to meaningful jobs. I hope it leads us to a higher since of optimism that this country is finally starting to right itself out of this recession. I hope the new year finds everyone in a better place than they are now.

King Tut Exhibit

Hi Everyone,
Went to see the King Tut Exhibit today with my family. Had a great time although it was a little tiring because I've been fighting a cold the last couple of days. Good to be back home. The exhibit was really great. It was amazing to see treasures that were over 3500 yrs. old. I think thats what it said. Anyway if you have a chance to see it while its still in S.F I highly recommend it.
